Alex drove to the bluuf, parking his car at its base and making the climb to the top, his katana in hand. The bluff overlooked a wide river, and under the moonlight it sparkled like a band of stars. He sat down, indian style, and layed his sword across his lap. He closed his eyes, and steadied his breathing. He slowly slipped into the recesses of his mind. Here, he could think in peace. "The vampires are growing in number...the war is still raging..." He sighed. "Eventually...I'll be dragged back into it..." The idea did not thrill him. He had seen enough war. Two Hundred years of it had soured his taste for battle and carnage. He did not wish to kill again unless it was absolutely unavoidable. "And then of course...there are the human hunters who pursue both races relentlessly..." He was thouroughly disgusted with the world and what it had become.
Suddenly, he was back to that day, almost a hundred years ago, when he had vowed to leave the war forever. The night he had been with his mate, in their den, relaxing together after a hunt. Her sweet scent mingled with his own, and they were warm and happy. There was going to be a raid soon, on a vampire castle. He had been assigned to lead it. She was worried. She didn't want him to go. She wanted to leave the pack and go somewhere else, somwhere safer. But he reassured her with soft words and she soon forgot about it. The raid went off without a hitch...which was reason enough to be concerned. When the warriors returned...all they found was slaughter. Their dens had been dug out, their families burned and slaughtered. Finding his mate among that carnage had been the most terrible experience of his life. like the others, he had howled his lamentations to the moon, but only he had struck out with vengeance in his heart. He became a vicious beast, spending more time as a wolf than a man. He killed many, many vampires. After so many years of bloodshed, he had finally stopped. He began to loathe the creature he had become and chose to remove himself from the Vampire/lycan wars. And now...here he was...a pacifist in a world of war. He sighed...
