Worry etched her features as she scanned the night for his face. She didn't know why anymore than she had understood why he had chosen to help her out of the bar. It really didn't matter why, she would wait as he had told her to...
Time passed and her coffee grew cold between her hands still unsampled. She watched as the sirens and red lights gathered in the street somehow become just as dispassionate herself as the patrons of the dinner. She knows she should go out into the street and let the police know what she saw but the mobster spying her like he did...and just disappearing again made her keep her seat. Time passed and still no sign of Hide.
Several scenarios went through her mind concerning his fate, none of them pretty. The police scurried around, medics from the emergency squad performing their life saving techniques on the injured, saving some...not saving others. She sat frozen until the street cleared. When the last emergency vegicle left the scene she dropped a five on the table, setting her coffee atop the bill and went outside.
Walking to her car she felt empty inside and couldn't fathom why. Afterall, he had just been a face in the crowd who had acted beyond self interest for a moment and then was gone. She had nothing invested in him. At her car, pressing the electronic key to open, she paused with her hand on the door latch. Then why this barreness within her? Why this total absence of energy and spirit?
